As part of my ongoing efforts to organize progressive East Side volunteers to help Democrats in Republican-held districts, I attended a "Volunteer Summit" held by the New York State Democratic Party and the DNC's training unit.
The summit was very productive, and I was happy to hear that the State Party's plans lined up with my own thinking on the most productive use of Manhattan-based volunteers. The State Party is targeting Rep. John Faso's district in the Hudson Valley and Rep. Dan Donovan's district on Staten Island/Bay Ridge as the two highest priority for activists in this area. The Four Freedoms Democratic Club's Activism Committee has also expressed an interest in helping out in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, currently held by retiring Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.
My thinking is that we will organize phone banks on the Upper East Side to voters in these districts between now and August, then begin organizing weekend bus trips (budget permitting) to knock on doors in Kingston, NY and New Jersey and have small groups of weekday volunteers handing out flyers on the Democratic-leaning North Shore of Staten Island. I am in touch with campaign organizers and with the State Campaign Coordinator for this area to make that happen.
If you are interested in helping out in any of these campaigns, come to the Four Freedoms Democratic Club's next Activism Committee meeting or sign up for my email list.
