5/30/18 CB8 Discussion on Protecting Small Businesses

Sarah Chu and Mick Mellamphy, the co-chairs of the Upper East Side Community Board's Small Business Committee, hosted a meeting on small business issues in the neighborhood, particularly focused on vacant storefronts.

I had co-hosted a community forum on this topic with Borough President Gale Brewer back in February and was interviewed about it on MNN1's "Represent NYC", so I was excited to see what members of the community had to say. A lot of the discussion focused on the proposal to add an additional tax on vacant stores that Mayor De Blasio publicly supported in April. There was some concern that the City was rushing to impose a new tax without regard for what the money would be spent on, but also a general consensus that a tax of this kind would allow for more flexibility than top-down commercial rent control.
